Cysteine oxidation meets the cell cycle: a redox switch in p21
Julia Vorhauser, PhD
Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden
Julia is originally from Northern Italy and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where she works in the laboratory of Anna Wredenberg, focusing on mitochondrial metabolism. Her interest in redox biology began during her Master's studies, where she
investigated redox signalling in hypoxia and neuronal development. She subsequently joined the laboratory of Jörg Mansfeld at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, UK, for her PhD, where she studied the role of redox regulation in cellular proliferation. During her PhD, Julia generated cell-cycle-resolved redox proteomes to identify protein oxidations associated with specific stages of the cell cycle and characterised the functional relevance of the cell-cycle inhibitor p21. In her postdoctoral research, she is applying a similar redox proteomics strategy to investigate how protein oxidation regulates mitochondrial metabolism and contributes to metabolic disease.
Redox control of intestinal organoids in homeostasis and development
Silvia Torchio, PhD
Developmental Biology and Genetics Unit, Institut Curie, Paris, France
Silvia is a postdoctoral researcher at Institut Curie in Paris, France, in the team of Silvia Fre at the Developmental Biology and Genetics Unit, where she investigates the redox-related mechanisms shaping stem cell fate decisions in the small intestine using murine organoids. She has a
longstanding interest in stem cell biology and graduated in Biology at the University of Milano, where she investigated cell therapy strategies in murine models of muscular dystrophies.
She then moved to Vita-Salute San Raffaele University to undertake her PhD on the molecular and functional alterations underlying a rare form of diabetes, Wolfram syndrome, using pancreatic β cells differentiated from patient-derived iPSCs. Silvia became interested in redox biology through
her current research and combines molecular biology and advanced imaging to tackle outstanding questions in stem cell biology, spanning development and tissue homeostasis.
